The Nutley Board of Education is guided by the mission of the Nutley Public Schools: To challenge, inspire, and empower students to become creative, confident, passionate, self-directed citizens who actively and purposefully contribute in our global society.
Nutley Board of Education members are Nutley residents, elected to three-year terms. They are volunteers who dedicate their free time to the students of the Nutley Public Schools by serving on the Board. The President and Vice President of the Board of Education are elected by the majority vote of their fellow Board members during the annual January Reorganization meeting.
This nine-member, elected Board is a policy setting body and is not responsible for the administration of the district. The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for implementing district policies, overseeing day-to-day administration and operations, and addressing problems.
Board members attend one-to-two public meetings per month, held on Monday nights in the JHWMS Auditorium. In addition, they serve on one or more of the following committees: Administrative, Academic, Finance, Policy, and Ad-Hoc committees as needed.
In addition to their attendance at public board meetings and committee meetings; Board members are also required to attend NJSBA (New Jersey School Boards Association) training sessions on ethics, policy and Board roles and responsibilities. The Board works closely with the Superintendent of Schools and the Business Administrator/Board Secretary to help provide the best education to students in a fiscally responsible manner, within the financial constraints imposed by the State of New Jersey.
