Principal - Valley Middle School
JOB DESCRIPTION
Education: Master’s degree with emphasis in school administration.
Qualifications: North Dakota Secondary Principal’s Credential for Middle School Principal (currently Elementary or Secondary Principal Credential acceptable), North Dakota Teaching License, and experience in teaching. Administrative experience preferred.
Job Goal: The role of the Principal is to supervise the overall operation of the school; provide direction, supervision and instructional leadership for the educational program; implement the policies of the school board; establish a safe and supportive environment for all constituents; and carry out the directives of the Associate Superintendent of Secondary Education.
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
Leadership
- Identify, pursue, and coordinate the use of all resources to achieve the district’s and school’s mission and goals.
- Create a safe, supportive, collaborative environment that contributes to the desired performance of students and teachers in accordance with the district’s and school’s philosophy and mission statement.
- Provide instructional leadership by designing professional growth opportunities and growth-based feedback for all staff members at the building level.
- Implement a school improvement process that includes explicit attention to closing achievement gaps and equitable practices.
- Establish a building culture that values, supports, challenges, and celebrates all students.
- Lead or serve on committees as assigned by Central Administration.
- Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations.
- Keep current with trends, issues, and practices in education at the local, state, and national level.
Curriculum and Instruction
- Assist in selection, development and implementation of curriculum.
- Assist teachers, parents, and students in developing appropriate educational and behavioral plans for students.
- Provide and coordinate diverse co-curricular program for all students.
- Work with Special Education Department in the referral, staffing, support and placement of students with special needs.
- Ensure adopted curriculum and priority standards are implemented with fidelity
Management
- Oversee the administration of all programs and develop the master schedule.
- Implement the policies of the School Board and directives from Central Administration.
- Proactively create a safe environment and maintain student discipline consistent with school rules and policies as annually outlined and updated in the student handbook.
- Maintain an accurate pupil record and reporting system.
- Administer the building budget and account for all expenditures.
- Maintain an accurate inventory.
- Complete local, state, and federal reports.
- Supervise all areas of the plant and grounds.
- Participate in planning and supervising construction and renovations to the school plant.
- Prepare for emergency situations and communicate and practice emergency drills as appropriate.
Personnel
- Recruit, select, and orientate and train all personnel in the building.
- Delegate duties to certified and non-certified staff, supervise and evaluate staff according to district and state regulations.
Communication
- Maintain positive written and oral communications with families; building and district personnel; community organizations; and collaborate with other educational and social agencies and the community.
- Encourage and promote parent involvement in the school.
- Provide appropriate written communications via school newsletters, handbook, etc.
- Supervise the planning and promotion of school activities.
Supervisory Responsibility: All staff and students of the school.
Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others.
Terms of Employment: As established by negotiations (230 day contract – end of July to end of June), frequent irregular and extended work hours including weekends.
Evaluation: By the Associate Superintendent of Secondary Education at least twice each year in the first three years of service (December 15 & April 15), and at least once each year thereafter (April 15).
